Cannington is one of the world's largest and lowest-cost producers of silver and lead.  Located in northwest Queensland, Cannington boasts an underground mine and processing facility situated approximately 800 kilometers west of Townsville and a concentrate handling facility at the Port of Townsville.


About the role


Reporting to the Geology Superintendent, this role is responsible for the planning and execution of Brownfields Exploration, including the management of exploration related HSE, target generation of brownfields base metal discovery opportunities and budgets. The role is also responsible for assisting in the development of technical work programs designed to simply and effectively test for resource potential and ensuring exploration plans are designed to deliver against operational requirements.


This role is a 2-year fixed-term contract.


Accountabilities include:


  • Visibly lead safe behaviour, coaching workers in safe behaviours and routines including Workplace Interactions and TAKE5s
  • Manage performance of your team to ensure health, safety, environment and risk standards, procedures and routines are complied with
  • Lead and provide effective geoscience input and advice on the identification and evaluation of high-quality exploration opportunities and projects to support Cannington Operations growth strategy
  • Exploration drill hole and program design, core logging, assay QA/QC and contractor management
  • Management and interpretation of geological, geophysical and geochemical datasets
  • Mentor and train geologists and field technicians
  • Track and manage Brownfields Exploration performance and results and provide management with information regarding any financial, legal, performance deviation or technical difficulties
  • Provide guidance and input into the annual Cannington Exploration budget
  • Collaborate with South32 Functions, Project and Planning team and other Cannington based departments to build relationships and enable the execution of a safe and efficient brownfields exploration program


Cannington mine provides resort style onsite accommodation with laundry and meal services, as well as sporting and gym facilities and is FIFO from Townsville or Brisbane.


About you


The ideal candidate will need to have the following:


  • Tertiary qualification in Geology (minimum)
  • Advanced understanding of the geological processes driving mineralised systems and the formation of mineral deposits, particularly BHt systems
  • Planning and execution of exploration work programs, including visible safety leadership and sound risk assessment and management
  • Sound general knowledge of resource estimation, mining and processing techniques
  • Prior experience working with or advising business / resource development teams is an advantage
  • Extensive and varied experience working in exploration or consulting to mining / exploration companies across a range of commodities
  • Intermediate to advanced computer literacy skills (particularly Arc GIS, ioGAS, Leapfrog and Microsoft Office Applications)
  • Exploration project portfolio management experience
  • Budget preparation and submission
  • Have or be willing to obtain First Aid and CPR training prior to commencement; training must be to a nationally recognised standard such as Apply initial response First Aid RIIERR205 + Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) HLTAID001; or Provide First Aid HLTAID003
  • Hold QMS123 or similar
  • Hold minimum of G2 or work towards attaining G2
