ABOUT CANNINGTON
Our Cannington operation is one of the world's largest producers of silver and lead. Located in northwest Queensland, Cannington boasts an underground mine and processing facility situated approximately 800 kilometres west of Townsville and a concentrate handling facility at the Port of Townsville.
Flights are direct to the onsite airport, and the mine is only 3.5 km from camp—the perfect distance for a sunset walk or run home along a purpose-built walking track. The onsite accommodation includes meal services, sports/gym facilities, swimming pool, music room, and social area.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is a Permanent position on an 8:6 roster, FIFO from Brisbane or Townsville direct to the onsite airport, or DIDO from Mount Isa/Cloncurry/McKinlay.
As the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer, you will be responsible for the integrity, safety, and performance of tailings storage facilities across all stages of their lifecycle, from operation to closure.
Working with key South32 stakeholders you will ensure alignment of key dam safety priorities and objectives and influence long-term organisation improvements.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Leading risk identification, mitigation & reporting for tailings infrastructure.
- Ensuring compliance with GISTM & internal safety frameworks.
- Coordinating cross-functional teams on tailings design, construction & maintenance.
- Overseeing water management & surveillance to uphold operational standards.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Extensive experience in the design, construction, operation, and monitoring of TSF and water dams.
- Driving tailings safety through technical leadership & independent judgement.
- Collaborating effectively with internal & external stakeholders.
- Applying deep knowledge of TSF design, regulation & risk management.
- Communicating clearly across all levels with strong influencing ability.
Qualifications for this position are:
- Engineering degree qualification in relevant discipline (Civil, Geotechnical Soil mechanics, Mining).
