ABOUT Vancouver

The Vancouver office, located at Oceanic Plaza in Vancouver's CBD, supports South32’s Corporate Development and Exploration functions. The office was recently refurbished and provides a bespoke workplace environment with access to a vast array of amenities in proximity of key transport options.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

As Analyst, Business Development you will support the identification and analysis of Exploration and Development stage opportunities as well as the preparation for and execution of public market and private treaty transactions, with accountability for key related workstreams. The position further supports the management of South32’s royalty portfolio, including its related equity investments. You will collaborate with stakeholders across South32’s Group Functions and Operations and will be in a position to influence portfolio level decisions at the senior leadership level. 

 

Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to: 
•    Assisting in managing South32’s royalty portfolio including:
    o    Reviewing underlying assets, including verifying the status of royalty-linked concessions and analyzing the value implications of recent work conducted by operators
    o    Addressing any deficiencies in legal documentation, including registering / updating security documents where possible
    o    Maintaining the internal valuation model and issuing update reports to the Corporate Development and senior leadership teams on a regular basis
    o    Administration of royalty payments and participating in site visits, as applicable
    o    Providing commercial support in executing royalty sale transactions, as applicable
•    Providing commercial support to the Exploration team, including:
    o    Negotiating confidentiality agreements with counterparties
    o    Coordinating the review of press releases from existing exploration partners
    o    Providing commercial input to support the Exploration team’s evaluations
    o    Managing existing earn in and joint venture agreements, including any required amendments
    o    Negotiating new earn-in and joint venture agreements, as applicable

•    Providing commercial support in securing early-stage development opportunities through equity investments as well as earn in and joint venture agreements, including: 
    o    Negotiating confidentiality agreements with counterparties
    o    Conducting screening analyses to identify opportunity set
    o    Co-ordinating due diligence investigations
    o    Undertaking financial modelling and valuation activities including working closely with technical experts and incorporating due diligence findings 
    o    Managing data rooms and related Q&A processes
    o    Assisting with preparation of reports and presentations of a succinct and high-quality nature, to be delivered to the senior leadership team and Directors, as applicable
    o    Work with relevant Group Functions to identify, plan for and effect the activities required to execute transactions 
    o    Interacting with external transaction advisors to meet transaction deliverables
•    Providing supporting in managing existing equity investments, including:
    o    Issuing update reports on a regular basis to the Corporate Development and senior leadership teams
    o    Coordinating and preparing for Technical Committee meetings
•    Supporting the New Markets and Strategy team on an ad-hoc basis, including:
    o    Providing analytical support with a focus on the development of new downstream businesses and battery minerals products, including the assessment of new opportunities and commercialization of existing options with customers and downstream participants
    o    Assisting with the completion of annual and periodic documentation of strategy reviews for the Board of Directors to help shape the direction of the Group’s corporate strategy 

 

ABOUT YOU 
•    Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate studies degree in a commercial or quantitative science discipline, or received CFA Level 1 (or other relevant and industry recognized) accreditation
•    More than 2 years’ experience, including relevant experience in either (i) the resources industry / operations, or (ii) experience in either Management Consulting, investment banking or Big-4; or (iii) another relevant, commercial-focused role
•    Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
•    Ability to interpret and analyse financial statements (P&L, cash flow and balance sheet statements)
•    Good understanding of economics, corporate finance and valuation methodologies, including discounted cash flows 
•    Strong analytical, modelling and research skills, including demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Excel
•    Knowledge and understanding of diverse data sources (S&P Capital IQ, analyst reports, company reports, etc.) and an ability to effectively coordinate and filter relevant information from those sources
•    Confidence and experience in presenting financial and related analysis to the Corporate Development and the senior leadership teams
