Construction Engineer - Underground

The location of this role is the Hermosa Project site near Patagonia, Arizona

The Role

Assists in management of engineering activities and skilled, technical, and professional staff engaged in construction of underground facilities as well process facilities, surface infrastructure, roads, dams, water treatment plants, power infrastructure, maintenance and administrative buildings, and all other onsite and offsite infrastructure. Responsibilities include liaising with engineering contractors as well as internal stake holders to ensure engineering completeness. This role will be heavily focused on the detail engineering of both the underground mine and the process plant enabling efficient construction.

Accountabilities (Include but are not limited to):

Individual Accountabilities:

• Assists in management of the site construction contractors;
• Ensures that work is always executed in a safe manner;
• Ensures that S32 corporate safety and business goals are met or exceeded;
• Ensures that project engineering activities and services are executed in conformity with S32’s environmental policies and plans;
• Ensures that project engineering activities and services are executed in conformity with S32’s community relations policies and plans;
• Assist with the preparation of Sourcing Strategies for major works packages as required;
• Assists with preparation of annual budgets with input and assistance from the Project Controls Team;
• Reviews project construction schedules;
• Assists with timely submission of contractor progress and cost status reports to the Project Controls Team;
• Assists with implementation of remedial recovery action as required;
• Ensures strict compliance with S32 Change Management processes;
• Ensures timely delivery of project construction services to internal stakeholders;
• Participates in construction contractor risk assessments with input and assistance from the S32 Risk Specialist, S32 Engineering Department, Consultants, internal stakeholders and the S32 Construction Team;
• Ensure that S32 Virtual Design and Construction initiatives are properly resourced, and that work is executed in accordance with applicable S32 technology objectives;
• Extract data from sources such as plans, engineering reports, and specifications to help facilitate the work of construction contractors and vendors;
• Assists with the compilation of construction documentation for upcoming work packages;
• Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and building code requirements including Federal, State, and Local;
• Ensures conformity with industry codes of practice and standards;
• Assist to Engineering Manager on the review of all underground engineering documentation produced internally or by any contractor.
• Participates in the S32 site Quality Circles initiative;
• Ensures that all work conforms with the specified quality standards;
• Assigns, schedules, reviews, and evaluates work of subordinates;
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:

• Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mining Engineering required.
• Drive company vehicle and be covered under company insurance.
• Minimum 6 yr of mining underground engineering/construction support.
• Experience managing construction contracts and vendor services contracts;
• Experience working with teams and interacting with customers;
• Experience working in a cross-cultural setting;
• Proven track record of developing and maintaining a safe work culture;
• Experience with Building Information Management systems;
• Demonstrated experience implementing Environmental Compliance obligations.
• Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive safety and performance excellence
• Knowledge of construction and trade practices
• Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools used to track cost, time and quality
• Knowledge of management concepts and best practices
• Strong and effective communication and engagement skills
• Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively
• Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Strong English language written and oral communication skills
