ABOUT THE ROLE
This permanent position will be held in our Singapore offices.
As Operator Freight Safety & Vetting, you will be responsible for vetting vessels that transit through South32's supply chain, while overseeing operational safety on our chartered vessels and coordinating safety with the terminals we work with.
You'll oversee the daily operations of South32's chartered ships, ensuring they adhere to our company procedures and comply with industry regulations to maintain a safe and smooth operation.
Reporting to the Lead Freight Operations, other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- You'll handle all aspects of chartered vessel operations from start to finish, including appointing port agents and weather routing services, managing loading and discharge documentation, coordinating bunker planning, processing freight invoices, and evaluating voyage economics. This includes laytime calculations, settlement negotiations, and ensuring smooth communication between vessels, terminals, and agents throughout each journey.
- Take complete ownership of vessel and terminal incidents, cargo claims, and schedule disruptions. You'll assess cost impacts, develop recovery plans, communicate changes to stakeholders, and follow through on all freight, hire, and cargo claims to completion while maintaining transparent reporting to management on vessel and terminal performance.
- Support the vetting process and sanctions monitoring for all vessels entering South32's supply chain, working closely with the Freight team to ensure proper risk mitigation. You'll verify that vendors and contractors meet our work standards and compliance requirements while staying current on regulatory changes that could impact vessel performance and chartering practices.
- Conduct post-voyage reviews to identify areas for enhancement, propose contingency plans to maintain service levels, and drive process optimisation across marine operations. You'll manage commodity forecasts and schedules, understand operational constraints and costs, and proactively suggest feasible alternatives to stakeholders when challenges arise.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Background in freight operations, shipping, or logistics with international companies will be put to good use as you work across our worldwide operations.
- Results-focused approach, who takes initiative, drives results, and constantly looks for ways to improve how things get done.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to tackle complex operational challenges, cut through complications, and develop backup plans when things don't go as expected.
- Confidence in your decision-making, working well with others, and making wise decisions quickly when the situation calls for it, keeping operations moving smoothly.
- Experience with IMOS, SAP, and Excel enables you to manage vessel operations, handle laytime and demurrage calculations, and maintain efficient operations.
- You're comfortable working with various stakeholders inside and outside the company while providing practical safety advice to freight and commodity teams.
Qualifications for this position are:
- Degree (or equivalent) preferably in maritime studies, business management, or logistics and supply chain management.
