ABOUT HILLSIDE
Our Hillside Aluminium smelter in Richards Bay produces high-quality, primary aluminium for the domestic and export markets.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
This role is a permanent full-time position. As Superintendent Occupational Health, Hygiene & Environment, you will lead the occupational health, hygiene and environment function at Hillside to ensure effective health, hygiene and environmental risk management, compliance with regulatory and company requirements, successful delivery of the Hillside health, hygiene and environmental strategy and continual improvement in health, hygiene, medical emergency response and environmental compliance.
Key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures to define requirements for effective occupational health, hygiene, medical emergency response (MER) & environment management;
- Lead occupational health, hygiene, MER and environmental governance to ensure legal compliance;
- Conduct risk assessments and establish and maintain occupational health, hygiene & environmental risk registers;
- Ensure that an effective medical emergency response service is available at all times;
- Ensure that all environmental authorisations, permits and licenses remain current and valid;
- Monitor regulatory changes, technology enhancement and leading practice and advise accordingly;
- Provide input into the development of the Hillside HSER business plans to ensure adequate coverage of occupational health, hygiene & environment. Define site objectives, targets, track and report progress;
- Ensure safe and effective deployment of appointed health, hygiene, MER & environment providers;
- Ensure that clinic and MER infrastructure are well managed and maintained;
- Lead occupational health, hygiene & environment monitoring to ensure legal / company compliance;
- Ensure that medical files are effectively interrogated for early detection of potential occupational illness;
- Report internally (including corporate) and externally on occupational health, hygiene & environment performance. Accountable for the accuracy and integrity of all occupational health, hygiene, MER & environmental data;
- Interrogate and analyse available health, hygiene & environment data to identify emerging risks. Advise on options for risk mitigation and assist with implementation of suitable controls;
- Ensure proactive and reactive health, hygiene & environment incident reporting and investigation. Establish root causes, implement actions to prevent repeats and ensure effective close-out of actions;
- Ensure effective chronic medical monitoring and management. Conduct periodical wellness campaigns;
- Identify, lead and facilitate occupational health, hygiene, MER & environmental improvement initiatives;
- Ensure that health, MER & environmental issues are considered and mitigated during job planning and execution;
- Develop occupational health, hygiene and MER awareness, capability and capacity;
- Interface with corporate, regulatory and industry stakeholders on behalf of Hillside, where required;
- Ensure the retention, filing and maintenance of occupational health, hygiene & environmental legal documentation;
- Manage the Health, Hygiene, MER & environmental Team and associated budgets at Hillside.
ABOUT YOU:
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Minimum of 5 years in experience in Health, Environment, Risk HER of which at least 2 years were in a leadership capacity;
- In depth knowledge of occupational health, hygiene, MER and environmental risk management;
- The proven ability to lead and build high performing teams;
- The ability to inspire, engage, influence and challenge at all levels to achieve desired outcomes.
Qualifications for this role are:
- Degree/BTECH/National Diploma in Occupational Health, Hygiene, Environment or related fields.
