ABOUT PERTH OFFICE

 

South32’s corporate office is based in the heart of Perth’s CBD. The corporate office houses key functions including HR, Finance, Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Group Risk and Technical. Our office is conveniently located a 5-minute walk from the Perth Underground Train Station.

ABOUT THE ROLE

 

This permanent position will be located in our Perth office. We understand and value the benefits of flexibility and operate a hybrid work model (in the office and from home).

 

As Principal Generative, you'll be at the core of South32's global exploration strategy, connecting with teams worldwide to provide expert early-stage target generation, geological support and guidance aimed at identifying new areas with potential of mineral discoveries. Working collaboratively across our exploration portfolio, you'll help both generate and evaluate new opportunities alongside supporting both current projects and potential acquisitions. You'll also nurture our geoscience practices by implementing and improving standards, ensuring our teams have the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager Exploration – Technical, other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to: 

 

  • Generate, identify and evaluate high-quality resource opportunities that support our growth strategy, with particular focus on base metals. As a technical specialist, you'll assess both new, internal and external opportunities, including conducting field evaluations across established regions and new territories globally. Identifying underexplored or emerging mineral belts.
  • Collaborate closely with global Exploration and Corporate Development teams to provide essential geoscience expertise that guides exploration programs and key technical decisions. Your role includes coaching and mentoring fellow geoscientists, sharing knowledge to strengthen our overall technical capabilities.
  • Ensure geological operations run safely and effectively through strategic planning, scheduling and execution of work programs that build and maintain a robust portfolio of opportunities. This encompasses managing consultant relationships and business partnerships to support critical exploration objectives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry exploration results and regional trends Additionally, evaluate the latest research and technology advances to identify practical solutions that enhance our discovery success rates.

 

ABOUT YOU 

 

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following: 

 

  • Multi-commodity geoscience expertise with a strong base metals background (porphyry, VMS, SEDEX, IOCG, skarn systems) across early to advanced exploration stages and diverse geographies.
  • Understanding of geological processes driving mineralised systems with proven ability to develop exploration strategies and identify value drivers across commodity portfolios.
  • Advanced generative exploration and prospectivity mapping skills with the ability to integrate technical, commercial, and risk considerations when working with incomplete or ambiguous datasets.
  • Specialised expertise in core logging, geological mapping, and interpretation of complex multi-disciplinary datasets including geochemical, geophysical, and remote sensing data. Geochemical background advantageous.
  • Proficient in 2D/3D geological modelling using Leapfrog, Vulcan, and ArcGIS with working knowledge of resource estimation and mining processes.

Demonstrated experience in global collaboration, technical communication, and portfolio management alongside prospect to belt scale targeting.

 

Qualifications for this position are: 

 

  • Bachelor’s (Hons) degree in Geology or equivalent
  • Strong background in base metals required, particularly porphyry, VMS, SEDEX, IOCG and skarn deposit systems
