Eagle Downs is a large, high quality and fully permitted metallurgical coal development project located approximately 25km south-east of the town of Moranbah.




South32 are seeking an experienced candidate to be the South32 representative for the Eagle Downs Joint Venture Project. The role manages the Eagles Downs Joint Venture Agreement and Management Agreement from South32’s perspective to ensure collaborative relationships and rapid and effective resolution of Joint Venture matters to enable the successful delivery of the Project’s study phase and potential execution phases. This position also plays a role in ensuring the successful integration of the Project into South32 management processes and systems.


This position is to be offered on an initial two-year fixed term basis. Based in our Brisbane project office, this role will report through to the VP Planning & Projects and will have key relationships with the Project Study Team and Project Director.



  • Lead, influence and facilitate decision making to improve the performance of the Joint Venture relationship and agreements towards the effective and commercially viable delivery of the project.
  • Ensure all work is well designed and reliably delivers safe, effective outcomes with improved working relationships between South32 and its Joint Venture partners.
  • Define and lead local plans to enable the coordination of processes and initiatives to improve the integration of the Project office into South32’s functional policies, procedures and systems.
  • Membership of the South32 representative on the Eagle Downs Technical Committee.
  • Ensure integration of Marketing participation for the Project and coordinate functional service delivery and support to the Project
  • Provide guidance and insight on other Joint Venture challenges across South32.
  • Apply change management and strong communication strategies to projects, initiatives and services related to Joint Venture matters and to matters relating to South32’s interests within the Eagle Downs Project.
  • Support the Project Director in ensuring that organisational capability related issues (including processes, systems and skills) are identified and managed in a proactive way, leveraging expertise within South32.
  • Work in partnership with key stakeholders to proactively identify the people, business and commercial implications of strategic and business plans and other developments and facilitate the implementation of effective solutions.


About You

  • Relevant degree or appropriate experience (preferable in Commercial, Legal or Business Administration)
  • Excellent negotiation, influencing and persuasion skills. Able to effectively and creatively challenge people, situations and current thinking.
  • Skilled and credible in business evaluation and commercial processes.
  • Significant resource sector experience, preferably with time in coal mining operations.
  • Previous experience of Joint Venture management
  • Project development experience or capital project management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute, influence and make decisions within multi-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of change and project management principles and methodologies.
  • Possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills coupled with a strong partner service ethic to build strong internal and external relationships.
