ABOUT THE ROLE

This position in our Perth office runs throughout your studies, with cadets potentially advancing to our Graduate Program upon university completion. We're looking for collaborative individuals committed to fulfilling cadetship and academic requirements.

The role is part-time during university semesters, perfect for students balancing professional growth with education. This role offers more than just office work. During breaks, you'll work full time at our Worsley operations (supervised), gaining valuable industry exposure. These hands-on assignments with project, maintenance, and technical teams bridge classroom theories with practical applications, enhancing your learning journey and building career-ready skills.

As Engineering Cadet – Major Projects, you will support your Engineering Studies with practical experience through rotations in major projects, other technical functions, and on-site teams. You'll handle specific tasks under supportive guidance, delivering work that meets stakeholder requirements safely and on time. You'll progress to more responsible positions as you build skills and knowledge.

Reporting to the Lead Engineer, other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Work on exciting engineering projects under supervision, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including operations teams, specialised engineers, and external partners, to develop successful ESP design solutions while learning technical review processes.
  • Grow your engineering knowledge by engaging with design management standards, project processes, and discipline-specific activities such as drafting specifications, reviewing drawings, and contributing to equipment datasheets and electrical modelling.
  • Participate in critical engineering functions, including safety inspections, design reviews, risk assessments (HAZOP, HAZAN, LOPA), operational readiness, and commissioning processes with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Gain valuable experience through occasional travel to South32 assets and vendor premises, with opportunities for site-based assignments in maintenance or technical teams that expand your understanding of practical engineering applications.

ABOUT YOU

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:

  • Bring awareness of good safety practices from previous workplaces and strong performance in STEM studies to contribute meaningfully to our engineering team.
  • Showcase excellent communication skills at all organisational levels while developing your ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills in practical engineering scenarios, maintaining professional and ethical standards as you navigate real-world challenges.
  • Utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Office suite proficiency while cultivating an enquiring outlook and enthusiasm for learning new technical skills in our dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrate technical capabilities through engineering calculations and innovative solutions, while building valuable knowledge of in-house and international standards for reviewing project documents.
  • Share relevant industry experience, technical work background, or hobby-related skills that have helped you develop practical engineering insights and workplace adaptability.

Qualifications for this position are:

  • Enrolled and in either your 2nd or 3rd year in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent in Western Australia
  • Class C Driver’s License would be well regarded.
