The location of this role is the Hermosa Project site near Patagonia, Arizona.

This role ensures compliance with MSHA training requirements to include Mine Rescue, Hazwoper, MSHA Regulatory training, field coaching and assessments across the operation and projects located within Hermosa.
Accountabilities (Include but are not limited to):
- Assist the company health, safety and security programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work.
- Demonstrate and/or lead the commitment to the pursuit of achieving Zero Harm through behavioral based safety.
- Ensure compliance with applicable HSS performance standards, objectives and regulations.
- Live and foster the South32-Hermosa Corporate Value.
- Promote the Hermosa HSS management system so that policies, procedures, and requirements are understood, properly interpreted, administered and reviewed.
- Provide consultation and coaching to all employee groups with a purpose of instilling and maintaining a pro-active approach to safety in all areas.
- Train others on incident investigation techniques ICAM and the use of the South32 Global 360 database, and participate in incident investigations, reporting and follow-up.
- Develop health and safety training materials to include manuals, brochures, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
- Coordinate on-site and off-site safety and health training for new and existing employees.
- Coordinate and present safety training to support client requirements including new hire orientation, fall protection, confined space, lockout/tagout and other Life Saving Rules programs.
- Coordinate and conduct required Mine Rescue training that includes meeting regulatory compliance with Mine Safety && Health Administration requirements.
- Accompany external safety and health auditors during site inspections.
- Facilitate federal and state (OSHA, MSHA and State Mine Inspector) inspections of the site to assist positive outcome.
- Provide technical expertise in occupational health & safety regulations, policies and procedures.
- Make recommendations to HSS manager regarding health, safety and security policy issues.
- Develop and oversee the implementation of local HSS policies and programs.
Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a preference in a health sciences discipline or a combination of years of direct experience and education in lieu of degree will be considered.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act 1977 required
- Prior knowledge and/or experience in Surface and Underground Emergency Response, and MSHA regulations required
- Completed MSHA certified trainer certificate to include Surface, Underground and Mine Rescue Instructor, or experience to meet requirement to attend certified training to obtain certification
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, demanding work environment required
- Experience in forming and leading effective teams for a minimum of ten
- (5) years.
- Proven contribution in establishing training plans and leading the delivery of those plans, based on effective leadership.
- Demonstrated experience in executing technical HSS related work
- Track record in leading change initiatives in a diverse business setting
- Minimum seven (5) years’ experience in mine health and safety required
- Minimum five (5) years supervisory/management experience in occupational health and safety required
- Demonstrated capability to develop sound working relationships based on trust, required to negotiate and influence both internal and external stakeholders, including:
- Hermosa Leadership Team
- Regulators
- Community stakeholders
- Requires knowledge of key concepts, theories and practices related to the effective management of HSE related risks.
- Sound report writing skills
- Ability to influence and gain the trust of the Hermosa leadership team and key stakeholders
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills
