The location of this role is the Hermosa Project site near Patagonia, Arizona

This role provides specialist support and advice to operation-based and functional teams on hygiene management aspects to support:

  • Adherence to the South32 Health Standard;
  • Legal compliance and material-risk mitigation at the operational level;
  • The delivery of the functional business plan, hygiene authorizations and strategic improvement projects.




Primary responsibilities are to:

  • Implement systems and processes that enable line leaders to meet their regulatory commitments;
  • Provide operational support and technical advice/coaching for effective management of site hygiene matters;
  • Engaging with the global discipline team/HSE or Risk Leads for complex issues and/or significant events to support the management of hygiene-related risks, including the design, execution and assurance of critical controls;
  • Facilitate the implementation of the Global Health Standard (Occupational Exposures) and HSEC Reporting Standard (exposure metrics) at the operation;
  • Provide input into the short and long-term planning at the operation, ensuring that key hygiene risks are considered appropriately to support ongoing compliance and leading best practice;
  • Develop and maintain operations specific hygiene management system documentation (management plans, procedures, etc.) in line with regulatory requirements, Global Health Standard and the operational risk profile;
  • Facilitate occupational exposure assessments in line with “recognized” practice and with consideration of legal and Global Health Standard requirements;
  • Design and execute hygiene monitoring programs ensuring that they are fit for purpose, aligned with regulatory requirements and the operational risk profile;
  • Maintain process for the collection and verification of hygiene data relevant to the operation and undertake data analysis to enable emerging compliance and/or hygiene (e.g. exposure) issues to be identified and actively managed;
  • Manage hygiene module of Cority and other programs such as Chemalert and liaise closely with Health Team;
  • Identify and coordinate/execute site specific improvement initiatives that will deliver a more efficiency and/or effective functional service, or support improved hygiene outcomes for the operation;
  • Support the delivery of the business-level strategic improvement initiatives relevant to the operation, in collaboration with the Global Discipline Team and the operation;
  • Support first line assurance activities to verify operational conformance with the Health standard and the management of hygiene-related risks at the operation;
  • Monitor the implementation of improvement plans developed to support improvement hygiene outcomes or to address identified gaps to verify the accuracy of health metrics and monitoring data to monitor regulatory compliance processes;
  • Preparation and submission of regulatory reporting processes specific to the operation;
  • Be the key point of contact with local regulators, ensuring sound working relationships are developed and maintained and the authorities are notified of health events in a timely manner;
  • An overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development; and
  • Develop sound working relationships based on trust.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance to Legislation (including Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act and Regulation and associated guidelines; and the Workplace Health and Safety Act and Regulation).


Qualifications and Experience


  • Undergraduate or post graduate qualification in Occupational Hygiene or related (E.g. Health Science related, Chemistry / Toxicology);
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or ability to attain full membership;
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances;
  • Sound communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills;
  • Can successfully manage time, set priorities, plan, communicate and organize work deliverables;
  • An internal and external customer service focus;
  • Sound understanding of hygiene management processes and technologies and relevant industry standards (e.g. AIOH and ICMM);
  • Sound understanding of safety, health and hygiene legislative requirements and associated standards such as QGL02;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face-to-face and remote relationships);
  • Demonstrated ability to influence small groups of internal stakeholders through effective data analysis and communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision and able to self-manage priorities;
  • Experience in identifying issues, analyzing data and recommending sensible and practical improvement solutions;
  • Experience in executing technical hygiene related work;
  • Previous site-based health, hygiene & safety related position at an active mining property preferred.
