The location of this role is the Hermosa Project site near Patagonia, Arizona

 

The Role

 

The Environmental Engineer primary purpose is to ensure compliance with state, Federal and company requirements for South32 Hermosa Inc. in Patagonia, AZ. This position interfaces and collaborates with site-based teams including Construction Engineering to establish, review and endorse environmental requirements for engineering deliverables. Supports environmental compliance by developing, implementing, and enhancing environmental compliance processes in accordance with regulatory and company requirements and drive processes for continuous improvement. This position will support project permitting activities, data collection/analysis, and reporting of air, meteorological, greenhouse gas emissions and Toxic Release Inventory. This position will be responsible for and serve as the internal subject matter expert on compliance with state and federal emissions related initiatives (Including Title V and State Operating Programs, Federal and State air permits and GHG reporting obligations).

 

Accountabilities

 

Individual Accountabilities:

 

  • Supports compliance, review, and reporting associated with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and permits including Clean Air Act, Aquifer Protection, and Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System.
  • Supports environmental review of detailed engineering designs and drawings for mining and support facilities.
  • Participates in facility design reviews include HAZOP, HAZID, change management, and risk assessment processes.
  • Conducts field-based assurance activities and positive interactions with construction teams and contractors to help ensure facility construction is in accordance with engineering designs and environmental permit requirements.
  • Adhere to and promote a safe workplace and meet all company and MSHA safety requirements.
  • Supports and participates in an inclusive working environment by complying with South32 Values and Code of Business Conduct.
  • Maintains knowledge of current environmental regulations and requirements and updates environmental and compliance management systems accordingly.
  • Reviews and supports air quality assessments including data analysis and emission inventories.
  • Develop and implement Air Quality Management System.
  • Develop audit protocols and coordinate internal and third-party audits to confirm compliance with air quality related requirements.
  • Assists with implementing sustainability programs including energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions.
  • Utilize Earthsoft EQuIS database system for managing data, compliance requirements and environmental reporting.
  • Coordinate and support environmental studies and monitoring including contractor management.
  • Ensure that departmental and company goals are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities.
  • Complete special projects or other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or a related technical, or scientific discipline.
  • 7+ Years of relevant work experience in environmental engineering, air quality and/or mining required.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrates analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in design reviews and implementation of environmental controls and requirements.  Preferably in mining or large industrial facility.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, regulatory analytical methods, and industry standards.
  • Able to manage environmental documentation in accordance with record retention requirements.
  • Drive company vehicle and be covered under company insurance
  • Pass a Background and Drug Screen
  • Ability and willingness to work underground and in remote areas outdoors in rough terrain by foot or by 4-wheel drive light vehicle
  • MSHA Certificate is a plus
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in mining, studies, construction and permitting/approvals processes
  • Experience with a mining, production, or manufacturing facility preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of environmental management systems such as ISO 14001
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, measure and analyze environmental risks and develop appropriate programs, procedures, and training to manage those risks.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data, and to identify relevant issues in solving business problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to review engineering design drawings and analyze for appropriate engineering controls and permit compliance points
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, PowerPoint, etc)
  • Working knowledge of environmental management system and environmental database systems
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct
  • Strong English language written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, maintain composure, set priorities, and work with a myriad of personalities
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining a safe work culture
