ABOUT Hermosa

Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.

About The Role

The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for safely delivering geotechnical support across all phases of the project, including transitioning into operations. This role involves managing and supporting geotechnical work programs associated with the Hermosa Project’s construction scopes, ensuring that deliverables meet required schedules and technical quality standards. (SIte based Hermosa Mine near Patagonia, Az)

Other key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Individual Accountabilities:

• Work collaboratively with project teams and external consultants, provide geotechnical inputs to mine design and construction, and ensure designs are implemented to specification.
• Deliver clear, accurate, and timely geotechnical information and advice to study managers and site operations teams.
• Identify, analyze, and communicate geotechnical risks associated with current and proposed mining areas to relevant stakeholders.
• Support site operations by offering geotechnical expertise, including conducting periodic inspections and audits of key programs and processes.
• Actively contribute to the Hermosa Project’s Risk Management process.

• Assist in the development and maintenance of the Hermosa geotechnical database, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility for mine design purposes.
• Conduct geotechnical QA/QC to ensure compliance with MSHA regulations and the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
• Implement and maintain geotechnical monitoring instruments and associated wireless data collection systems to support real-time analysis and reporting.
• Oversee the implementation and verification of the Hermosa GCMP.
• Support the integration of underground geotechnical data collection and mapping systems, including the use of LiDAR technology.

Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a closely related field (required)
• 1-3 years of experience in a Geotechnical, Geology, Hydrogeology or Mining role.  
• Strong relationship-building skills with demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to foster consensus and alignment through collaborative engagement.
• Strong technical writing and presentation skills to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to think strategically, demonstrate good judgment, strong organizational and planning skills required.
• Ability to work in a complex project setting.
• Must maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct.
• Team oriented with strong leadership skills and demonstrated commitment to safety and health, and environment excellence along with technical best practices (required).
• Experience with software such as LeapFrog, Rocscience Suite, Map3D and other 3D modeling programs is a plus.
