ABOUT Hermosa

Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

Safely support and coordinate the logistics of South32 Hermosa drilling activities

Other key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Safety

• Promotes and instills the requirement to act safely and responsibly
• Supports the execution of Hermosa site and exploration drilling activities to both MSHA safety and South32 drilling standards and regularly monitors compliance
• Supports the safe execution of drilling related field logistics
• Completes all mandatory and necessary training compliance
• Completes training and assessed to be competent before operating any machinery or undertaking a task

Operational Potential Development

• Supports logistics planning, coordination and monitoring of drilling and exploration field activities
• Provides technical advice to Hermosa Geology, Mining, Environmental, Geotechnical, Metallurgical and Construction teams
• Liaises with Hermosa Environmental, Site Services, Geology, Geotech, Mining, Construction to optimise safe and compliant drilling activities
• Coordinates and monitors the activities of all drilling contractors
• Reviews daily drill reports on all active drills and related projects to ensure quality of data collection
• Develops, maintains, and updates all relevant work practice documentation (Safe Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures) as required
• Ensure Time in Field commitments are fulfilled and monitored
• Ensures drilling contractors meet contractual obligations in production and costs

Maintain Meaningful Connection

• Participates in professional development programs and competency-based training as required
• Participates in regular 1 on 1 review meetings with Drilling Lead
• Attend all relevant meetings with Hermosa stakeholders and contractors

Functional Support

• Provides technical support to Mining, Environmental, Geotechnical, Metallurgical and Construction Teams for planning
• Work with Drilling Contractor to ensure safe and efficient work practices
• Participate in drilling contractor reviews, tender documentation, and technical evaluation

Technology and Innovation

• Contributes to and directs the implementation of technology initiatives to optimise operational and portfolio potential

Environmental and Social Leadership

• Liaise with Environmental and Permitting Teams to coordinate regulatory compliance for all field and site-based activities

Portfolio Optimization

• Participates in Geology Team Projects as required

Planning and Reporting

• Project manages field program logistics
• Completes regular drilling performance analyses
• Assists with timely reporting of relevant Hermosa Project Geological activities
• Provides explanations of variances in cost reporting
• Assists with Geology Team operating and capital budgets

 
ABOUT YOU 

•  High School Graduate/GED
• BS in Geology or related field with drilling experience advantageous
• Valid light vehicle driver’s license and ability to drive a company work vehicle
• Minimum three years of mineral drilling related work experience, brownfields and/or greenfields exploration programs using open hole, RC and diamond drilling techniques; underground experience advantageous
• Surface and underground contract drilling or drill management experience
• Experience supervising drilling activities optimal
• Report writing and analysis level skills in MS Office suite, especially MS Word, Outlook, and Excel
• Experience in directional drilling programs advantageous
• Proven track record of developing and maintaining a safe work culture
• Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive and extract safety and performance excellence
• Strong and effective communication and engagement skills to work at relevant levels of the organisation
• Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively
• Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct
• Strong English language written and oral communication skills
