Illawarra Coal is a long term and leading coking coal supplier which operates two underground metallurgical coal mines, two preparation plants and a logistics chain.


Illawarra Metallurgical Coal (IMC) operations are in the southern coalfields of New South Wales, near the city of Wollongong and approximately 75 kilometres south and southwest of Sydney.

Metallurgical coal is an essential ingredient in producing steel, and our Illawarra mines produce some of the highest-quality metallurgical coal in the world. We sell our coal to local steel makers and export it to customers around the world where it is turned into products such as bridges, cars, buildings and new technology.

IMC employs around 1,800 people and is a strong economic contributor to the Illawarra region through direct employment, its support of local businesses and industry, and through its community contributions.


About the role

The role sits within the Corporate Affairs team at IMC and is responsible for developing the Community Investment Program, to make meaningful contributions to the communities that support our operations. The successful candidate will be proactive in developing strong relationships with community groups, leaders, business networks and official bodies such as local councils. They will be able to make evidence-based business cases to achieve internal support for the program of community investment, as well as manage these investments through execution and develop a program of proactive communications around them.


Individual Accountabilities

  • Develop a strategic Community Investment Program for Illawarra Metallurgical Coal
  • Develop communications strategies and materials in support of IMC’s operations and community investment activities, including promotion through media and community channels
  • Manage community investment activities and relationships with local community groups
  • Identify opportunities for community liaison and relationship building
  • Undertake analysis to understand host communities
  • Maintain relationships with local councils to ensure South32’s value is understood
  • Monitor NGOs and Community Communications to keep abreast of stakeholder opinions and key issues relevant to South32 community/external stakeholder relationships and identify key risks and opportunities
  • Organise and participate in South32 shows and displays in relevant communities
  • Organise and participate in Community Consultative Committees


Shared Accountabilities (if applicable)

  • Communications: Provide support and input to IMC and South32-wide communications including development of project materials for internal and external communications
  • Brand: Ensure compliance to South32 Brand strategy


About You

  • Driver’s License
  • Qualification in Communications, Public Relations or a related community field.
  • Prior experience managing community investment programs or another project management.
  • Prior work experience or demonstrated skills in public relations or communications.
