Illawarra Coal is a long term and leading coking coal supplier which operates two underground metallurgical coal mines, two preparation plants and a logistics chain.

 

 

Major operating and continuous improvement objectives and priorities are set

  • Identify Continuous Improvement (CI) opportunities and advise management on setting of major operating objectives (via regular diagnostics and value driver assessments)
  • Lead site Alignment process (business plans, monthly priorities) and enhance key Mine Operating System (MOS) elements (e.g. maintenance work management, planning, supply/demand collaboration etc.)
  • Lead the Management & CI Team in Qtly/monthly stretch target setting
  • Sign off monthly priorities of Continuous Improvement team
  • Clearly define targets and priorities to CI team and related/supporting stakeholders

Continuous Improvement standard exists and rolled out in major areas of operation: 

  • Alignment Standard is in place as a controlled document and adhered to (via Alignment Assessments)
  • Continuous Improvement Standard in place as a controlled document:
    • Ideas Management prcess is established and imbedded
    • Benefits tracking prtocol in place and signed off by finance
    • Clse the Gap (CtG) CI sustainability framework is imbedded, and periodic assessments completed
  • Integrate major functions of the operation into operational and CI standards

Implementation of Continuous Improvement ideas and methodologies are rigorously driven

  • Ensure rigorous and sustainable implementation of CI initiatives and methodologies
  • Utilise support from relevant departments and functions to remove obstacles to CI implementation and ultimately avoid implementation failure; i.e. ensure rapid delivery of top CI initiatives

Value-adding CI ideas and strategies are validated and initiated

  • Initiate value-adding CI ideas, methodologies and strategies
  • Formally validate all Cash Flowing (CF) and Locked-in (LI) ideas

Effective and efficient resources are allocated; Build capability in CI team and site; Succession planning

  • Facilitates the access of CI team to required resources and expertise
  • Ensure effective budgeting and optimum allocation of resources within business
  • Deliver CI training to site personnel to increase site awareness and capability of CI methodologies
  • Talent Management: Ensure CI resource pipeline is full and succession plans in place for all CI roles (incoming CI candidates known, and outgoing CI members know where they are going)

Performance evaluation and results tracking are conducted

  • Develop and implement effective results tracking system
  • Conduct regular assessment of the operation’s improvement performance
  • Provide inputs to external appraisals/validations as required
  • Complete regular improvement diagnostics to confirm constraints and improvement levers

Relationships and interlink between major functions exist to ensure co-ordination

  • Establish communication channels between sections and interacting departments/ contractors to allow for timely and accurate receiving and dissemination of relevant information
  • Regularly provide feedback to management team on improvement progress
  • Use peer relationships to ensure that departments and functions are adequately engaged
  • Integrate various relevant functions of the operation into CI implementation

Optimisation and maintenance of CI tools, methodologies and associated technologies/ techniques are ensured

  • Ensure that improvement methodology(s) policies are validated and implemented
  • Ensure the maintenance of infrastructure of CI tools, methodologies and associated technologies/ techniques e.g. Close the Gap (CtG) assessments, tracking and reporting tools etc.
  • Promote CI initiatives and benefits thereof within IMC

Ideas deliver substantial benefit to target in volume, cost, efficiency and MOS improvements

  • Ensure the achievement of high return on investment (ROI) in implementation of CI tools, methodologies and associated technologies/ techniques
  • Implement effective benefits tracking system
  • Ensure key improvement enablers (e.g. MOS improvements) are prioritised to ensure operational stability
