ABOUT MAMATWAN

The South Africa Manganese operation can be found in the manganese rich Kalahari Basin, in the country’s Northern Cape, which is home to 80 per cent of the world's manganese. This position is based at our open-cut Mamatwan mine which started operating more than half a century ago.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

This role is a permanent full-time position.

We are seeking an experienced and driven Mine Manager – Surface Operations to lead our open-pit mining activities at Mamatwan Mine. This role is critical in delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable production while driving a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.The successful candidate will be a strong leader with a proven track record in surface mining, capable of optimizing performance, improving equipment utilization, and embedding disciplined execution across mining teams. This is a legal appointment as per Section 3.1.(a) of the MHSA and this role will be reporting to the General Manager.

 

Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

•Lead all surface mining operations to ensure safe, consistent, and cost-effective production delivery;
•Champion our safety commitment: ensuring every employee goes home safe and well at the end of each shift;
•Drive operational excellence through improved equipment utilization, productivity, and adherence to plan;
•Lead initiatives to improve overburden performance, mining rates, and cycle efficiencies;
•Embed a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and discipline across teams;
•Ensure full compliance with MHSA regulations, company standards, and best practices;
•Manage and develop a high-performing team of supervisors, engineers, and operators;
•Collaborate closely with maintenance, planning, and processing teams to optimize end-to-end value;
•Monitor and improve key KPIs including production volumes, costs, availability, and utilization;
•Manage conflicts within the workplace & resolve grievances and disputes;
•Driving safety culture upliftment through our Lead Safely Every Day (LSED) program;
•Effective collaboration with other HOD’s to drive the strategic objectives of the company (HMM Vision and strategy);
•Mentor individuals to enhance the individual`s knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in a selected career path.

 

 

ABOUT YOU:

 

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:

•Must have minimum of 10+ years total mining experience at least with 5+ years at production HOD/Section Manager/Superintendent  level in surface operations;
•Competence in MHSA statutory appointments, management of departmental budgeting &  execution of operational strategy.

 

Qualifications for this role are:

•Degree/BTech/National Diploma in Mining or related field, together with Mine Managers Certificate of Competency (DMRE) for Metalliferous/Opencast mines;
•Leadership or Financial qualification is advantageous.
