Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is an open-cut mine that is accountable for over 20% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963

ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is a permanent, site-based position on a 4:3 day shift roster, with a FIFO arrangement from Darwin or Cairns.
As Superintendent Engineering, you'll provide engineering governance and technical oversight to ensure our work meets safety standards, operates reliably, and maintains compliance across GEMCO operations. Your expertise will lead the team to deliver quality outcomes that keep operations running smoothly.
Reporting to the Manager Engineering & Capital Works, other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Oversee all engineering activities across GEMCO, ensuring compliance with South32 standards while balancing operational needs with risk management. You'll maintain the Engineering Blueprint and structural integrity program to keep our assets safe and reliable.
- Advance safety in design principles across modifications and projects, facilitating risk assessments and design reviews. You'll oversee the Management of Change process to ensure thorough assessment and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Develop a high-performing engineering team by guiding and mentoring Principal Engineers, Drafters, and Document Controllers while fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and succession planning for future capability.
- Connect engineering with operations and strategy by collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, and Capital Works teams to deliver engineering services that support operational needs, contribute to the Strategic Asset Management Plan, and coordinate with external consultants while maintaining document control standards.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Minimum of five years leading engineering teams for operating assets in brownfield environments, with visible field safety leadership and a history of developing safe work cultures.
- Extensive knowledge of engineering governance, statutory obligations, and compliance in mining or heavy industry, with substantial experience in AS/NZS Standards and Quality Management Systems.
- Strong capability in structural integrity, asset management, and safety in design principles, with expertise in managing Management of Change processes and engineering standards.
- Communicate effectively at all levels with excellent written and oral English skills, influencing and negotiating with diplomacy to build consensus across diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in engineering and asset management tools like SAP, SharePoint, CAD, Primavera P6, and MS Project, with strong analytical skills and strategic planning capabilities to balance competing priorities in complex operational environments.
- Demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence, and cross-cultural effectiveness in building strong working relationships, with experience working in remote locations and cross-cultural environments.
Qualifications for this position are:
- Relevant Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering
- Qualification in Project Management or demonstrated equivalent experience in a similar role
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or Registered Professional Engineer (desirable)
- Class C Driver’s License
