ABOUT GEMCO
Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is an open-cut mine that is accountable for over 15% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.
The onsite accommodation includes meal services and access to excellent facilities, including a gym, beachside workout area, swimming pool, golf course, tennis and squash courts, a sports oval and a range of scenic walking tracks.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is a Permanent position on a 4:3 roster (Monday-Thursday), FIFO from Darwin or Cairns. Residential option to live on Groote Eylandt considered.
As the Principal Closure Strategy & Governance, you will be responsible for developing and embedding effective closure governance across GEMCO, ensuring alignment with corporate frameworks, regulatory obligations and stakeholder expectations while coordinating sitewide activities that prepare the operation and community for the Closure Readiness phase.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Establish clear governance structures, roles, approvals and assurance pathways
- Integrate closure planning, execution and reporting across operational and corporate systems
- Coordinate contributions from multiple functions to ensure consistent and aligned closure workstreams
- Support risk identification, tracking and improvement across strategic and operational closure activities
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Experience in closure and/or programme governance within operational environments
- Knowledge of Western governance systems and First Nation governance approaches
- Ability to influence diverse stakeholder groups with strong judgement and strategic insight
- Skilled communication that enables clarity, alignment and constructive challenge
- Proven ability building effective relationships with internal teams, external partners and community stakeholders
Qualifications for this position are:
- Tertiary qualification in governance, programme management or a related discipline (desirable)
- Current C Class Drivers Licence
