The Role


The role is responsible for the delivery of specialized operations planning, resource procurement, infrastructure establishment, logistics and field execution activities across Greenfields Exploration. The scope includes the delivery of these specialist services at all stages of the exploration lifecycle, from early stage reconnaissance through to the project handover or divestment.


The role is responsible for the safe implementation and continuous improvement of operational standards and practices (in Project/Region) and to deliver against the Greenfields Exploration strategy, targets and objectives.




Operations Management:

  • Responsible for contract and project level management, business partner performance supporting Greenfields technical and operational objectives, including relationship management, performance review and contract governance. This also includes establishing and maintaining an interdependent safety culture within the team and contractor / consulting network.
  • Accountable for the establishment and management of field camps, camp services, aviation, supply, logistics and infrastructure required to support exploration activities.
  • Delivers safe and effective field operations by working closely with the Greenfields Exploration team members, internal functions, external specialists and third parties to develop and execute fit for purpose; Project Operations Plans, Project Risk Assessments, Project Schedules, Project Budgets and Project Crisis and Emergency Management Plans aligned to South32 standards, and external requirements.
  • Responsible for regular reporting on the progress of Exploration Projects - measure, verify and report Greenfields exploration operations performance, as well as provide management with information regarding any safety, financial, and operational performance deviation. Specifically;
    • Accountable for verifying Greenfields Exploration controlled operational activities are executed in accordance with the South32 Standards and Greenfields Exploration Performance Requirements. 
    • Ensures that HSEC and business risk issues and events are reported, understood and managed, and improvements are implemented as planned.
    • Accountable for verifying competency of operations personnel and contractors in safe performance of their duties.
  • Contributes to the day-to-day supervision of operations personnel and contractors, except those managed through other Functional Groups.
  • Works, in collaboration with Supply, to develop and maintain relationships with local contractors and suppliers and ensures alignment of the contractual obligations, terms and scope. This includes, maintaining day to day correspondence with contractors, preparing contract variations requests, as required, and in collaboration with Supply, negotiates with contractors to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Accountable for the tracking and maintenance of existing company exploration assets.


Key shared responsibilities:

  • Informs and works collaboratively with the Greenfields Exploration technical teams and South32 Functions to ensure project scope, planning and field activities have appropriate capacity and capability to effectively manage and safely execute work programs.
  • Collaborates with South32 Functions to build resilient relationships with our business partners, communities and local/federal governments to ensure South32 has a social and legal license to operate.
  • Works in collaboration with Supply, Community and Legal Functions, to develop and maintain relationships with contractors and suppliers and ensures alignment of the contractual obligations, terms and scope.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate and compliant Human Resources, HSEC and Risk materials for Greenfields Exploration, and tailored for each project / site in conjunction with the relevant function SMEs.  


Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or greater in Project Management or Planning would be highly regarded.
  • Advanced mineral exploration logistics and operations skills required, and the ability to balance commercial, operational and risk elements based on incomplete and / or ambiguous information.
  • 10+ years in Exploration Operations / Logistics
  • Demonstrated experience managing exploration field operations. Experience working in developed (Canada and US) as well as developing countries will be highly regarded.
  • Experience establishing and working in camps in remote locations
  • Visible safety leadership and sound risk assessment and management
  • Development, planning and execution of exploration work programs
  • Project planning experience: including budgeting and scheduling
  • Contractor management
  • Experience interacting with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Establishing and leading remote workforces in multiple countries
  • Performance management, including measurement, tracking and reporting of operations project delivery and results
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team in developed /developing countries
  • Experience working with aviation supported exploration programs of different scales
  • Highly developed communication and collaboration skills
