Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Geotechnical Engineer Intern, you will support the site Geotechnical and Technical Services team in evaluating ground conditions, collecting geotechnical data, assisting with underground monitoring programs, and contributing to safe and efficient mine development during the 2026 summer season. This role is based in Hermosa Site near Patagonia, Arizona.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Conduct underground mapping using industry-standard systems (Q-System, RMR).
- Support geotechnical data collection programs and logging data QC.
- Help evaluate and verify installed ground support (bolting, mesh, shotcrete, cable bolts).
- Participate in ground support QA/QC including pull testing and shotcrete/concrete QC.
- Participate in underground inspections, hazard identification, and ground condition reviews.
- Ensure all tasks are carried out in accordance with site safety protocols and ground control standards.
- Participate in safety meetings, JHAs, and risk assessments for geotechnical activities.
- Exercise responsible decision-making regarding conduct and adhere to South32 policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
About You
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or related discipline.
- Ability to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by South32’s policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly in technical settings.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented and eager to learn.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to take direction from leadership, mentors and managers.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, Microsoft suite, etc.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
