Illawarra Metallurgical Coal is a long term and leading coking coal supplier which operates two underground metallurgical coal mines, two preparation plants and a logistics chain.




This position will be based at Dendrobium Mine which is in the southern coalfields of New South Wales, near the coastal city of Wollongong and approximately 75 kilometres south and southwest of Sydney.


The Opportunity


Reporting to the Vice President of South32’s Illawarra Metallurgical Coal (IMC) business, the purpose of this role is to provide overarching strategy and leadership to the production, maintenance and compliance departments across Dendrobium Mine and Dendrobium Coal Preparation Plant. This role is accountable for ensuring delivery against performance targets for safety, production and unit costs. The General Manager is also responsible for the long-term strategy of Dendrobium through planning and effective management of people, resources and physical assets and in turn providing input into the future direction of IMC’s operations.


Accountabilities include:

  • Lead and coach the Dendrobium Leadership Team as they foster a culture of engagement, inclusion and high performance
  • Set and deliver the operating and capital budget for Dendrobium valued at ~$350million 
  • Make key long-term decisions that determine the future viability of the Operation, including future mining domains, long term asset management decisions and key customer relationships.  
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to help drive strategic decisions around policy, mining approvals, government relations, and others as required 
  • Oversee the statutory and legal obligations in relation to compliance, material risk, health and safety. 
  • Lead and approve the strategic and tactical production and maintenance plans to optimise operational capacity and productivity 
  • Set the overall strategy for the framework for the Mine Operating System (MOS) and leads implementation to drive disciplined planning, delivery, accountability, and urgency. 
  • Manage and oversee the development of a strategy for continuous improvement and innovation initiatives that will generate positive business outcomes, improve production and safety across Illawarra Coal 
  • Set the strategy and lead the development of the Dendrobium Business Plan
  • Safeguard and enhance the South32 brand in the community where the operation is located
  • Owns, approves and executes the operational readiness plan for Asset and Major Capital Projects at Dendrobium.

  • A minimum tertiary qualification in mining, commercial or engineering discipline
  • Experience in a senior management role within heavy industry.  Experience in underground mine is high desirable for this role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience leading geographically dispersed teams
  • Experience guiding, developing and influencing practice in Maintenance and/or Production of the operation
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute, influence and make decisions within multi-functional teams
  • Demonstrated ability to select, develop, coach and mentor employees resulting in improved engagement, diversity and organisational capability.
