The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President Ops & Asset President, the Greenfields Exploration Lead is accountable for the operational and technical elements of all greenfields field activities on existing and newly acquired South32 mineral title in Colombia. The role ensures execution of greenfield exploration activities in accordance with approved exploration and operations plans developed collaboratively with Corporate Development and CMSA Functions to effectively. Accountabilities span from generative, through to early stage reconnaissance and delineation phases. The role is also accountable for tracking and reporting on regional exploration trends and opportunities. You will have the opportunity to influence the team and drive significant change. 


What the Role Entails

Exploration Management

Accountable for Greenfields operational and technical management, including day-to-day supervision of operations personnel and contractors, except those managed through the CMSA Functional Groups

Ensure that related activities are effectively planned, scheduled, budgeted and executed to build and maintain a portfolio of drill-ready exploration targets to support delivery against South32 global exploration strategy, targets and objectives.

Informs and works collaboratively with CMSA Functions, including P&D, HSEC and Security teams to ensure project scope, planning and field activities have appropriate capacity and capability to effectively manage and safely execute work programs.

Works, in collaboration with CMSA Supply, to develop and maintain relationships with local contractors and suppliers and ensure alignment of contractual obligations, terms and scope.

Accountable for the implementation and continuous improvement of project management standards and practices to achieve objectives of quality, cost and reduced cycle time.

Regular reporting to Corporate Development on the progress of exploration activities and measures, tracks and reports Greenfields exploration performance and results, and provides management with information regarding any financial, legal, performance deviation or technical difficulties.

Maintains a level of excellence and technical rigour in the exploration teams through mentoring, coaching and technical updates.


Collaboratively with Corporate Development, designs technical work programs to ensure exploration objectives are safely and effectively achieved.

Accountable for identification and evaluation of Greenfield discovery opportunities, through field / prospectivity mapping, opportunity identification, target generation and field validation activities (target testing and delineation).

Sets geoscience technical standards for Greenfields exploration and provides assurance that relevant activities are high quality, and being conducted to standard.

Accountable for the integration, validation, analysis, interpretation and storage of field based and external geoscience datasets.

Maintains current knowledge on third party exploration results, regional exploration activity and trends. Pro-actively provides feedback on regional 3rd party intelligence to Corporate.


About You

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Minimum BSc with specialisation in one of Geology, Geochemistry or Geophysics. A preference for post graduate degree and / or extensive industry experience;

A minimum of 20 years exploration and / or consulting experience across commodities and terranes;

Regional exploration project portfolio management experience;

Leadership of remote workforces, and sound risk assessment and management experience;

Spanish speaker with proficiency level of English;


  • Planning and execution of exploration work programs, including visible safety leadership and sound risk assessment and management.

  • Strong multi-commodity geoscience background, developed from substantive early to advanced stage exploration and development experience across diverse deposit styles and geographies.

  • Experience interacting with key stakeholders including communities and business partners.

  • Sound exploration judgement, balancing technical, commercial, operational and risk elements using incomplete and/or ambiguous information.

  • Works, in collaboration with Supply and Legal, to develop and maintain relationships with contractors and suppliers and ensures alignment of the contractual obligations, terms and scope.

  • Performance management, including measurement, tracking and reporting of exploration project delivery and results.
  • Advanced communication skills (Spanish & English), including the ability to present geoscientific results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in use of geological software packages (i.e. GIS and 3D exploration / mining software).
